To achieve its renewable energy targets, reports in 2021 indicate that the Netherlands will need to install between 29 and 54 gigawatts (GW) of energy storage capacity by 2050. Storage with efficient management systems and digital controls is a crucial element of a reliable, flexible and affordable energy system.
Wind turbines can only be built where this is possible and permitted under the rules in place to protect local residents, nature and the landscape. In the 4 remaining areas, that seems possible. Everyone was able to react to the draft Amsterdam Wind Energy Programme 2030 and the plan-environmental impact report in spring 2024.
Wind and large-scale solar capacity targets for the Netherlands in 2030 are based on climate policies and ambitions as set out by the the “Klimaat- en energieverkenning” (KEV) 2022 and the Coalition Agreement. Accordingly, we adopt the capacity targets as set in the National Plan Energie System (see more here).
At 7.2 kWh/day, Dutch households have one of the lowest rates of average electricity consumption in Europe. With an average 1.7 GWh generated per day in the Netherlands, wind is able to power 5.7 million Dutch households. Wind energy provides 7,500 jobs in the Netherlands.
To sustain a stable and cost-effective transformation, large wind integration needs advanced control and energy storage technology. In recent years, hybrid energy sources with components including wind, solar, and energy storage systems have gained popularity.
