These factors necessitate a paradigm shift in substation design and operation. The introduction of digital technology has been a game-changer for substations.
In this article, we discuss four grid technological innovations that are changing the way power substations work and giving grid operators the ability to better manage those substations and the network as a whole–paving the way to meet changing energy demands.
This integration introduces variability and unpredictability in power supply, posing new challenges for substations. There is an increasing emphasis on improving energy efficiency, reducing carbon footprints, and enhancing grid resilience against cyber and physical threats.
Automation is another critical aspect of modern substation technology. Automated control systems, such as SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition), have revolutionized how substations operate. These systems allow remote monitoring and control, reducing the need for manual intervention and improving response times to grid disturbances.
The metering system of the new generation smart substation is a digital energy metering system, which consists of an electronic voltage transformer, an electronic current transformer, a merging unit and a digital energy meter or a multi-function device integrated with a digital energy meter function and an electric energy collecting terminal.
With these new technologies, the aims of high degree of integration system, reasonable structure, advanced equipment, and economic energy saving are expected to be achieved. As a major part of the smart grid, the smart substation has entered a comprehensive construction stage.
