To improve the electrochemical performance of supercapacitors, the favorable structure of carbon materials should have the following properties: (1) fast electron and ion transport paths to ensure high-power ability and (2) efficient utilization of carbon surface and space for high-energy storage ability of the device (Figure 1).
The energy and power densities of the COFs modified CNTs based supercapacitors were evaluated to be 11.33 W h kg −1 and 272 W kg −1, respectively, much higher than those of most activated carbons and some graphene or CNT-based materials.
Supercapacitor is an electrochemical energy storage device based on the fast ion adsorption/desorption (electric double-layer capacitance) or reversible redox reaction (pseudocapacitance) at the interface of the electrode materials.
The assembled solid-state supercapacitors exhibited a high specific capacitance of 62 F g −1 with respect to un-doped (43 F g −1), N-doped (52 F g −1), and B-doped (55 F g −1) graphene aerogels, as well as good rate performance.
To meet the ever-increasing requirement of high-energy supercapacitors, there is an urgent need to improve the energy storage ability of the carbon surface (e.g., introducing pseudocapacitive contribution).
