Hydroelectric power plants usually are located in dams that impound rivers, though tidal action is used in some coastal areas.
Pumped storage hydropower (PSH) provides the largest form of energy storage in power grids, with 179 GW installed globally as of 2023. In this Review, we discuss PSH operation in power system support. There are different modes of PSH operation, including open-loop versus closed-loop systems, and binary, ternary and quaternary systems.

Renewable hydropower is a reliable, versatile and low cost source of clean electricity generation and responsible water management. Modern hydropower plants are accelerating the clean energy transition, providing essential power, storage, flexibility and climate mitigation services.
Storage hydroelectric systems store water for later use, which makes them a versatile resource for the grid. For example, large hydroelectric dams can be sited on rivers with valleys, creating an artificial lake or reservoir. Turbines and generators in the powerhouse generate electricity when water flows from higher-to-lower elevation.
