Solar inverter sizing refers to choosing an inverter with the appropriate AC output for your solar panel system's DC input. It's about matching capacity and performance, without wasting energy or breaching local export limits. Inverter size is measured in kilowatts (kW). It should match your solar array within a 1.15 to 1.33 ratio.
The size of your solar inverter can be larger or smaller than the DC rating of your solar array, to a certain extent. The array-to-inverter ratio of a solar panel system is the DC rating of your solar array divided by the maximum AC output of your inverter. For example, if your array is 6 kW with a 6000 W inverter, the array-to-inverter ratio is 1.
Inverters are usually sized lower than the kilowatt peak (kWp) of the solar array because solar panels rarely achieve peak power. The solar array-to-inverter ratio is calculated by dividing the direct current (DC) capacity of the solar array by the inverter's maximum alternating current (AC) output.
Not all inverters are equal; some deliver better efficiency than others. Look for inverters with high efficiency ratings (above 95% efficiency) to ensure you capture as much power from your solar panels as possible. It's also wise to choose brands known for reliable performance and strong warranties.
The size of a solar inverter is crucial because it determines how much energy can flow to your home and battery at any given time. More specifically, the inverter ensures that enough energy can flow from your solar panels to the grid and load or if installed with a battery, from and to the battery.
