Contact UsHere are the general steps of how a BMS can achieve voltage balance in a battery pack: Detection of imbalance: The BMS continuously monitors the voltage of each cell or module in the battery pack.
Generally, a BMS measures bidirectional battery pack current both in charging mode and discharging mode. A method called Coulomb counting uses these measured currents to calculate the SoC and SoH of the battery pack. The magnitude of currents during charging and discharging modes could be drastically different by one or two orders of magnitude.
Balancing operation: After deciding to balance the voltage, BMS will discharge the battery cell with a higher voltage or charge the cell with a lower voltage through the charge and discharge controller. This helps reduce voltage differences between battery cells.
A typical BMS consists of: Battery Management Controller (BMC): The brain of the BMS, processing real-time data. Voltage and Current Sensors: Measures cell voltage and current. Temperature Sensors: Monitor heat variations. Balancing Circuit: Ensures uniform charge distribution. Power Supply Unit: Provides energy to the BMS components.
Therefore, in discharging mode, current flows in the opposite direction from charging mode, out of the HV+ terminal. Generally, a BMS measures bidirectional battery pack current both in charging mode and discharging mode. A method called Coulomb counting uses these measured currents to calculate the SoC and SoH of the battery pack.
The battery's voltage, current, temperature, and SOC are all constantly monitored by the BMS. To evaluate the battery's performance and condition, this information is essential. As an example, the SOC, which measures the battery's remaining charge, has a direct impact on the EV's driving range.
