Diagram of a simplified offshore WPP system with STATCOM. The STATCOM with battery energy storage system in dc-link is expected to support the PCC voltage. It can be operated in GFL or GFM mode, or disconnected by the breaker SI.
The stability behaviors of wind power plant with STATCOM in grid-following and grid-forming modes are compared. Grid-forming STATCOM provides more stability margin to wind power plants than grid-following STATCOM. In weak grids, grid-forming STATCOM gives a nearly tenfold rise in damping ratio to wind power plants in comparison with GFL control.
A conventional solution to support offshore WPP is to utilize a static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) to provide dynamic reactive power and voltage regulation at the point of common coupling (PCC), which is also realized by GFL control based on PLL.
The small-signal model of a typical offshore WPP system is developed first, then compared from two perspectives – oscillation index for stability margin evaluation of a multi-input multi-output system and damping ratio of dominant poles, with respect to the critical control parameters.
As for GFM in case III, it not only provides sufficient stability margins in all conditions, but also showcases an interesting opposite behavior as GFL, i.e., the stability is enhanced as SCR reduces in this certain range, which makes GFM-STATCOM especially suitable for weak grid stabilization of WPP.
