Some key use cases include: Grid Energy Storage: Flow batteries can store excess energy generated by renewable sources during peak production times and release it when demand is high. The flow battery was tested for under 40 cycles, and results were compared to the conventional flow field designs, resulting in the discharge energy density, the power density, and the efficiency of the battery showing much improvement with the narrow gap arrangement between electrode and membrane (Citation 241).
But without question, there are some downsides that hinder their wide-scale commercial applications. Flow batteries exhibit superior discharge capability compared to traditional batteries, as they can be almost fully discharged without causing damage to the battery or reducing its lifespan.
The power and energy capacity of flow batteries can be adjusted by adjusting the storage of liquid electrolyte, which also helps in adjusting the overall efficiency of the system. Both the power density and energy capacity are also independent in flow battery systems.
