In this technique, the energy storage capacitor is charged by a high-voltage dc power supply through a charging resistor as shown in Fig. 21.3. The charging mode ends when the capacitor voltage equals the output voltage of the power supply. The capacitor is continually refreshed by the power supply.
The constancy of output voltage in a DC/DC output network is critical to SMPS (switched-mode power supply) electronic performance. When different output voltages are required by the circuit application, output filter capacitors are required to maintain current uniformity and reduce noise.
Conventional dc power supplies operate at a given dc output voltage into a constant or near constant load. Recharging the capacitor voltage to a specified voltage is tasked to a capacitor charging power supply (CCPS). The charging mode ends when the capacitor voltage equals the output voltage of the power supply.
Passive components, specifically inductors and capacitors, play a significant role in the operation of switch mode power supplies (SMPS). Inductors act as the primary energy storage device in most SMPS, while capacitors are used for filtering, decoupling, energy storage, and they affect the design of the compensation network since the SMPS is a closed-loop feedback system.
For instance, when a device requires a sudden surge of energy, capacitors can discharge their stored energy to meet the demand, preventing voltage drops and maintaining system stability. Different types of capacitors are used in power supplies, each with specific characteristics suited to various applications:
