Contact UsTo address the new requirements on optical networks imposed by the upcoming fifth-generation wireless (5G), such as high bandwidth, low latency, accurate synchronization, high reliability, and flexible application-specific network slicing, a new generation of optical networks that are optimized for 5G is in great demand.
In this chapter we will present and discuss enabling technologies for such 5G-oriented optical networks. We will first describe 5G wireless trends and technologies such as cloud radio access networks, massive multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO), and coordinated multiple-point (CoMP).
In the 5G era, fixed network, which includes optical access network and optical transport network (OTN) segments, is playing an increasingly important role in supporting broadband access to 5G base stations, homes, offices, shopping centers, business buildings, factories, smart cities, and much more.
Second section describes optical technologies for 5G front-haul, such as bi-directional direct fiber connection, C-band wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM), O-band WDM, passive WDM, active WDM, and semiactive WDM. Third section discuss the impact of fiber loss and dispersion on X-haul technology choices.
The upcoming fifth-generation (5G) wireless network brings to optical networking new requirements such as high bandwidth, low latency, accurate synchronization, and the ability to perform network slicing to optimize the resource utilization for any given application.
O-band optical transceivers at 10 Gb/s or below are already quite mature and widely deployed in backhaul/fronthaul optical interconnection for 3G/4G/LTE applications, which can continue to be used in 5G applications where 10 Gb/s or below bit rate per connection is sufficient.
