Contact UsAs India pursues its ambitious renewable energy targets and aims to enhance energy security, energy storage systems are set to play a critical role in the country's power sector. The integration of large amounts of variable renewable energy into the grid presents significant challenges, which energy storage can help address.
India's energy storage requirement, which is projected to be 60.6 GW/341.2 GWh by 20302, can either be met by Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) or Pumped Storage Projects (PSP). In the FY 2024-25 union budget speech, the finance minister signalled that an energy storage policy would be issued to promote the construction of PSPs in the country3.
While India's total renewable energy capacity has surpassed 200 GW, its installed energy storage capacity remains low at just 4.75 GW (PSP) and 0.11 GW (BESS) as of late 2024. The National Load Despatch Centre (NLDC) warns that delays in BESS and PSP commissioning could worsen energy shortages, especially during peak demand periods.
And the floodgates have opened: over 20 GWh of energy storage projects have already been announced — and we're just getting started. These aren't prototypes. These are the warehouses of energy that will run tomorrow's India, powering its ambition to achieve 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030 and energy independence by 2047.
If Indian policymakers want to broaden the role of energy storage in the power system, an important first step is to include energy storage in national energy policies and programs.
India's energy storage moment is no longer "coming." It's here. This is our shot to own the future of power. Let's not squander it with slow bureaucracy, overcautious thinking, or status-quo mindsets. The grid is changing. The world is watching. And the clock is ticking.
