Courtesy Siemens AG Siemens signed €700 million worth of contracts to build power stations in Libya, which will boost the war-torn country's power generation capacity by approximately 1.3 gigawatts.

Libya has rich oil and natural gas reserves that are used to produce power. At present, renewable energy sources play scarcely any role in the country. However, violent conflict is threatening the population's power supply: the existing power grid is damaged due to a lack of maintenance and acts of sabotage.

The power company forecasts that Libya's peak load will increase to 14,834 MW by 2025 and to 21,669 MW by 2030. Combined-cycle power plants in Misrata (650 MW) and Tripoli (671 MW) are contributing to increased generation capacity.
